Edison Plugged the Electric Chair — Then Spent Years Proving It Was Broken

Thomas Edison hated a great many things in his life — sleep, taking breaks, being wrong — but few things consumed him quite like his hatred of alternating current. Specifically, his hatred of the man promoting it: Nikola Tesla.

By the late 1880s, the so-called War of Currents was in full swing. Edison had built his electrical empire on direct current, the system where electricity flows in one direction at a consistent rate. Tesla, backed by industrialist George Westinghouse, was pushing alternating current — a system where the current periodically reverses direction and can be transmitted over much longer distances at much higher voltages. AC was more practical, more scalable, and increasingly more attractive to investors and cities looking to electrify.

Edison knew he was losing. So he decided to make alternating current synonymous with death.

The Campaign to Make AC Terrifying

Edison's strategy was straightforward and genuinely cynical. He began conducting public demonstrations in which animals — dogs, calves, and eventually a circus elephant named Topsy — were killed using alternating current. The goal was to make AC seem inherently dangerous, something no reasonable person would want running through their walls. He even coined a verb for it: to be killed by AC current was to be Westinghoused.

When New York State began searching for a more humane method of execution than hanging in 1888, Edison saw his opportunity. He lobbied, quietly but effectively, for the state to adopt electrocution as its official execution method — and specifically to use alternating current to do it. His reasoning was transparent to anyone paying attention: if the state of New York was executing criminals with AC current, that was the most powerful advertisement imaginable that AC current was lethal and terrifying.

He succeeded. The electric chair was adopted. And Harold P. Brown, an electrical engineer with close ties to Edison, designed the first chair to run on a Westinghouse AC generator.

August 6, 1890: The Plan Falls Apart

The first person executed in the electric chair was William Kemmler, convicted of murdering his girlfriend with a hatchet in Buffalo, New York. The execution took place at Auburn Prison on August 6, 1890, and it was a disaster.

The first jolt of electricity — 1,000 volts for 17 seconds — failed to kill Kemmler. He was still breathing. The witnesses, which included physicians and journalists, were horrified. After a pause to recharge the generator, a second charge was applied, this one far longer and stronger. Kemmler's body reportedly began to bleed, and witnesses described the smell of burning. The process took roughly eight minutes in total.

Newspapers across the country — and in Europe — described the execution in graphic, appalled terms. George Westinghouse himself was quoted as saying the whole thing would have been done better with an axe. Edison, who had pushed for this method to make AC look frightening, had instead made the entire enterprise look barbaric.

And this is where Edison's plan began to collapse in a very particular way.

The Unintentional Archivist of Execution Failures

Edison had a problem. The electric chair wasn't going away — it was now official state policy — but it kept going wrong. Executions throughout the 1890s and into the early 1900s were inconsistent, sometimes requiring multiple attempts, sometimes causing visible suffering that drew public outcry. Each botched execution was a reminder that the technology wasn't reliable.

Edison, ever the meticulous engineer, couldn't help himself. Even as he publicly maintained that electrocution was effective when done correctly, he accumulated data. He corresponded with prison officials. He documented variables — voltage, duration, electrode placement, the conductivity of different human bodies. His notes on electrocution failure were extraordinarily detailed.

Here's the irony: Edison had promoted the electric chair as a clean, instantaneous, foolproof method of execution. The data he spent years collecting demonstrated clearly that it was none of those things. It was inconsistent, equipment-dependent, and deeply vulnerable to human error.

He never published this work as a formal argument against capital punishment — Edison was not an abolitionist, and his motives were never humanitarian. But the record he assembled didn't stay private. It circulated. It was cited. It became part of the foundation on which others built.

The Legal Legacy Nobody Expected

In the decades following Kemmler's execution, American courts faced a slow but steady stream of challenges to electrocution as a method of capital punishment. The Eighth Amendment's prohibition on cruel and unusual punishment was the standard framework, and the arguments being made — that electrocution was unpredictable, that it could cause suffering, that its apparent cleanliness masked genuine brutality — drew heavily on the documented record of executions gone wrong.

That record, in no small part, existed because Edison had been trying to perfect the very thing he'd championed, and in doing so had catalogued its failures with characteristic thoroughness.

The legal challenges to electrocution gained serious traction in the 20th century. By the 1970s and 1980s, states were abandoning it in favor of lethal injection, often citing exactly the kind of concerns — inconsistency, potential for suffering — that the documented history of electrocution had made impossible to ignore. Today, electrocution is rarely used in the United States, and several states have banned it entirely.

The Deeper Irony

Edison wanted to make AC current look like a tool of death. In a narrow sense, he succeeded — the electric chair did use AC current, and for a time the association was exactly what he'd hoped for. But AC current won the War of Currents anyway. Tesla and Westinghouse's system powers virtually every home and building in America today.

What Edison actually left behind, when it came to the electric chair, was something far stranger than he intended: a meticulous, involuntary argument against the thing he'd helped create. He pushed for a method of execution, documented its failures obsessively, and handed those failures to a future he couldn't have anticipated — one where they'd be used to dismantle the very policy he'd spent his reputation promoting.

History is full of people who changed the world by accident. Edison usually gets credit for the things he meant to do. This one he probably would have preferred to forget.
